SUMMARY:Lunchtime Symposium - Buenos Dias\, Genossen: Cuban-East German Transnational Relations
DESCRIPTION:During the Cold War\, East Germany and Cuba nurtured an alliance on the basis of a shared ideological belief. This often overlooked relationship may be best illustrated by an unusual Cuban gift: An island named after the East German Communist idol Ernst Thälmann off the coast of Cuba. So what characterized this East German-Cuban friendship and how did it develop?

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Symposium: The Transatlantic Relationship: Marriage Counselling or Divorce Court?
DESCRIPTION:The Trump Administration’s actions are driving significant rifts in the transatlantic relationship. To some extent\, these are echoes of long-standing differences\, but the current administration’s approach is driven by a strategic logic that minimizes the importance of Europe. How far apart are the US and its European allies on the major geopolitical issues and what might the next few years hold for the transatlantic relationship?

SUMMARY:Rachel Applebaum (Tufts University)\, “Hearts\, Minds\, and Tongues: The USSR and Linguistic Competition in the Global Cold War”
DESCRIPTION:This talk argues language politics played an important role in the Global Cold War. In the aftermath of decolonization\, Soviet officials viewed themselves as having been drawn into a new field of Cold War competition with their western rivals—not only for the hearts and minds of Asian and African citizens—but also for their tongues. Soviet officials anxiously interpreted British\, American\, and French efforts to promote English and French language instruction in postcolonial Asia and Africa as a threat to their own\, emerging interests in the Global South. In response\, they developed their own project to use Russian as a form of soft power on the two continents—a project that derived heavily from the very countries whose influence it was designed to combat. The talk will highlight the USSR’s linguistic politics in the Global South in the context of the country’s broader Cold War project to make Russian into a “world language.”

SUMMARY:The World in Film
DESCRIPTION:My Rembetika Blues\nHow can music embody and reveal cultural identities and histories of migration and nationalism? \nMary Zournazi\, filmmaker\nChristin Zurbach\, University of California\, Berkeley \nregister at https://tinyurl.com/DERrembetika\nThe first 30 registrants will get free streaming access to the film for classroom use \nTeachers are invited to view the film My Rembetika Blues\, then join film director Mary Zournazi and historian Christin Zurbach\, to learn about both the film and its historical context. Participants will get free access to view the film plus a viewing guide. \nRembetika music or the Greek blues is a music born of exile and the streets\, developing its roots from the mass migration of people in the early twentieth century. Filmmaker M. Zournazi traces the journey of her forebears from Smyrna in Turkey to Sydney Australia but discovers more than family history – she finds out how music connects people during times of struggle and crises. By weaving together different stories of music and migration\, My Rembetika Blues documents a wealth of experiences that are often left out of the chronicles of history. \nThis series uses documentary film from around the world to teach techniques in critical film viewing alongside international cultural and historical topics. Each session delves into the cinematography and narrative of a single film. Participants will watch each film independently with the help of a viewing guide\, then join film-makers and other experts for discussion via Zoom. Participants may choose to attend any (or all) events in the series. \nThis series is a collaboration between federally-funded National Resource Centers and Documentary Educational Resources (DER). This program\, focused on My Rembetika Blues\, was organized and supported by: Center for European Studies at University of Florida\, Center for European Studies at University of Texas\, Austin\, and ORIAS (Office of Resources for International and Area Studies) at University of California\, Berkeley\, in conjunction with DER.

SUMMARY:Weaponizing the Past
DESCRIPTION:Department of Political Science\, Research Seminar in Politics\, Author Meets Critics: \nWeaponizing the Past: Collective Memory and Jews\, Poles\, and Communists in Twenty-First Century Poland \nSpeaker: Kate Korycki\, Western University\nCommentators: Natalia Aleksiun\, UF; Michael Bernhard\, UF; Lenka Bustikova\, UF \nIn Poland\, contemporary political actors have constructed a narrative of Polish history since 1989 in which Polish and Jewish involvement with communism has created a national concept of “we.” Weaponizing the Past explores the resulting implications of national belonging through a lens of collective memory. Taking a constructivist approach to electoral politics and nation making in Poland’s past\, this volume’s dual line of inquiry articulates why and how elites politicize the past\, what effect this politicization produces\, and contextualizes this politicization to illustrate contemporary production of anti-Semitism. \nSponsored by the Department of Political Science\, in cooperation with the Center for European Studies\, the Harry Rich Professor of Holocaust Studies\, and the Raymond and Miriam Ehrlich Chair

SUMMARY:The Greening of Greenland
DESCRIPTION:Connecting Vegetation\, Nutrients\, Landscape\, and Streams: An African’s Experience Conducting Research in the Arctic \nIzuchukwu Ezukanma\, Ph.D. Candidate\, Department of Biology \nThe Arctic is warming at a rate 3-4 times the global average resulting in significant loss of ice cover both on land and sea. The loss of ice cover on landscapes provides opportunities for microbes and plants to colonize newly exposed surfaces. Ezukanma seeks to understand the connection between plant communities on the landscape and the mineral element composition of the adjoining watersheds along a gradient from recently delgaciated sites to those deglaciated ~10kya. Ezukanma will present some broader implications of the team’s work\, as well as his own experience as an African researcher in the Arctic.
