SUMMARY:"Whom to Exclude in Order to Belong: Jews and the Catholic Church in Germany and France\," a talk by Ari Joskowizc
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a talk by Ari Joskowicz\, Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies and European Studies at Vanderbilt University\, as he addresses a largely unexplored aspect of Jewish modernity by illuminating the extent to which French and German Jews made use of the liberal catalog of villains in their attempts to express themselves politically.  It demonstrates how Jews used Catholicism and the Catholic Church as a foil that helped them define what it meant to be good citizens and practice a respectable religion.

SUMMARY:Mediterranean Movie Night! - "Paper"
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this film showing in Anderson Hall Room 034 at 5:10pm! \nEmrah is a dreamer who hopes to be a great director\, trying to shoot his first feature film. His father Mehdi\, a retired customs enforcement officer\, believes that Emrah is going to become a pharmacist. Emrah manages to cobble together funding from producers with the help of his friends and his mother Şahane\, but is held up by the bureaucracy. The main obstacle between him and his dreams is an endorsement letter he needs from Müzeyyen\, the head of the censorship board. But this proves more difficult than he expected… \nStanding up to authority in pursuit of his ideals\, this young man finds himself entangled in a vehement struggle against this petty official who blindly enforces a senseless law.

DESCRIPTION:Yusuf’s best friend is his father\, who supports his family’s modest life with the honey he collects from tall trees in the forests of the remote Turkish countryside. Yusuf is a quiet boy\, and his mother is concerned for his future. Perhaps he will follow in his father’s footsteps\, or perhaps school will offer him other opportunities. But the honey crop is failing\, and Yusuf has trouble learning how to read.

SUMMARY:"How Many Jews....? Driving the Volkswagen through Space & Time\," talk by Natalie Scholz\, University of Amsterdam
DESCRIPTION:Only a few years after WWII the Volkswagen Beetle became one of the most prominent political symbols of West German society’s economic recovery and its new beginning as a Western and democratic country. This talk tells a different story about what the Volkswagen signified for West Germans between 1947 and 1962. A joke about Jews and a 1960 advertisement will serve as – uncomfortable – stepping stones toward what is usually overlooked. The Volkswagen allowed Germans to transcend the 1945 divide in a very peculiar way: driving the Volkswagen elevated Germans “above space and time” and\, much like a ‘public secret\,’ kept ideas of Germany alive that were supposed to be dead and gone. \nNatalie Scholz is an Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Amsterdam. She works on the cultural history of the political in modern Europe (France and Germany) with a focus on symbolic representations and popular imaginations. In her current book project she explores the political meanings of everyday objects in postwar West Germany.
