DESCRIPTION:  \nLocation\n  \nLibrary West Room 212\n\n  \nBrief Intro\n  \nPrague 1968: From Reforms to Invasion & screening of documentary Oratorio for Prague as part of the Prague Spring: Culture\, Context\, & Normalization series\n  \nAn introduction by Professor Holly Raynard contextualizing the build up to the Prague Spring.\n  \nThe 26-minute documentary is a unique document of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. The movie began as a documentary about the liberalization of Czechoslovakia and then became a record of the entry of Russian tanks into Prague. The only filmed footage of the Soviet invasion\, it was seen by more than 600 million people when broadcast on television\, and it was the first information that the Soviet Army had not been “invited” in. The film also includes never-before-seen scenes from the Prague Spring before the invasion.\n\n

Even as the so-called “normalization” regime now set about purging representatives of the Prague Spring\, it worried about the very meaning of communism from hereon. Political idealism was dead\, and “socialism with a human face” had been defeated by Soviet tanks. So what was to be “normal” about “normalization”? The regime\, taking its cue from the Prague Spring\, turned television (and particularly television serials) into its most vibrant mouthpiece. Television characters\, not politicians\, answered the question: what is communism now?\n
