SUMMARY:Reflections from the EU CyanoCOST Project on Diversity\, Prevention\, Control\, and Mitigation of Cyanobacteria
DESCRIPTION:  \nLocation\n  \nMcCarty D G001\n  \nBrief Intro\n  \nDail Laughinghouse\nApplied Phycology\n  \nIn this presentation we will review aspects on the structure\, biology\, and ecology of cyanobacteria and their blooms\, and go over some coordinated efforts in European programs to tackle this emerging threat to public health. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are a widespread group of photosynthetic bacteria and are the basis for much of the primary productivity and nitrogen fixation on Earth. However\, nutrient enrichment (e.g. nitrogen and phosphorus) in our water bodies is leading to an increased growth and accumulation of these algae causing harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs). The occurrence and persistence of the blooms is increasing worldwide. In addition to mechanical and aesthetic issues\, many cyanoHABs produce and release toxins\, which can accumulate in organisms leading to ecosystem level problems and affect public health. Scientists\, regulators\, and citizens are becoming more aware of the alarming health risks and financial losses associated with harmful algal blooms\, which clearly calls for both short-term and long-term solutions.\n
