SUMMARY:The Impact of BREXIT on Higher Education in the UK and Northern Ireland
DESCRIPTION:  \nLocation\n  \nNorman Hall Terrance Room\n  \nBrief Intro\n  \nNicola Kernaghan\nQueen’s University Belfast\n  \nBREXIT: The Aftermath speaker series\n  \nThe outcome of the UK referendum to leave the European Union has had significant implications for all sectors of society\, including higher education. And\, with little time until the March 29\, 2019 deadline\, substantial uncertainty continues as the exit agreement had not yet been finalized. In Norther Ireland\, the situation is further complicated by the fact that this region of the UK has the only land border with an EU country\, the Republic of Ireland.In addition\, the regional government in Norther Ireland broke down in January 2017 and the province has been without effective local administration for over two years. For UK universities\, BREXIT has created particular challenges for student mobility\, staffing\, research\, and innovation. Queen’s University Belfast has been planning for BREXIT since September 2016. Dr. Kernaghan will discuss the impact of BREXIT on the university within the context of Northern Ireland.\n\n

SUMMARY:The Consequences of Co-option: Rising Populism and the EU Efforts to Combat Gender Violence
DESCRIPTION:  \nLocation\n  \nUstler Hall Atrium\n  \nBrief Intro\n  \nCeleste Montoya\nUniversity of Colorado Boulder\n  \nIn the past several decades\, feminist transnational networks have worked to get (and keep) the issue of gender violence on the European Union’s agenda. The 1990s and early 2000s was characterized by important victories for these dynamic networks\, as advocates from a wide array of countries utilized the various political opportunities of multilevel governance to push for European legislation framing gendered violence as a widespread problem in Europe and garnering vital resources to combat it. But the rise of the political right has had detrimental consequences for these efforts in myriad ways. In this talk\, Professor Montoya discusses how the co-option of gender equality discourses by conservatives and far-right actors has shifted EU policy framing and initiatives aimed at combating gender violence.\n  \nWith funding from the Erasmus+ European Commission Jean Monet Chair grant.\n
