SUMMARY:Peeking Behind the Curtain: Political Theater of Russian Education Reforms
DESCRIPTION:  \nLocation\n  \nKeene-Flint 005\n  \nBrief Intro\n  \nElena Aydarova\, Auburn University\n  \nRussia is often described as an authoritarian country under President Putin’s control. Yet this perception obscures policy activities of those who work under the shadows of powerful leaders and public institutions. Focusing on a recent wave of educational reforms in Russia\, Aydarova will share a story of how a small group of Russian academics orchestrated a set of reforms using the President and the Ministry of Education as the mouthpieces to justify their pursuits. The transformations pursued\, however\, capture the inner-workings of authoritarianism not only in the way that reforms are introduced but also in the futures that they seek to engineer. Drawing on the work of an obscure Soviet philosopher Shchedrovitsky\, Russian reformers reoriented the country’s educational system away from its commitments to equity towards service to the corporate sector. While some aspects of this story are uniquely Russian\, reformers’ positions in global policy networks demonstrate the relevance of this account for other parts of the world.\n  \nWith support from the College of Education and Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere.\n

SUMMARY:Trapping The Andre in the Poetics of Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:  \nLocation\n  \nTurlington 3310\n  \nCES Lunchtime Symposium\n  \nJeremy Frusco\, Ph.D. candidate in Music History and Literature\n  \nIt began as a joke among friends. The André\, a cover artist whose identity remains a mystery\, recalled in a 2018 interview that “I became aware of trap music and I thought that it was perhaps the furthest possible thing from [Italian singer-songwriter Fabrizio De André’s] poetics\, and I thought what operation (could be) more dystonic than to put the two together?” While The André intended for a comical and incongruous distinction between the singer-songwritertradition and contemporary trap music\, he instead touched upon a surprising kinship. While The André’s vocabulary of humor and mimicry seems at first to soften the political edge of these genres and styles\, further inspection reveals its place within a larger postcolonial discourse of the 21stcentury.\n  \nMr. Frusco’s research examines the interdisciplinary dimensions of popular music\, particularly rap\, and how contemporary artists use their platform to participate in critical discourses on identity\, race\, and belonging.\n
