FLAS Academic Year Fellowships

Application Deadline: February 2, 2024

Applicants are encouraged to attend a FLAS info session or schedule a one-on-one meeting with the FLAS coordinator. A schedule of FLAS info sessions is available on the main CES FLAS page and on the CES events page.

Requirements

The Center for European Studies (CES) awards annual Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships, which are funded by the US Department of Education under Title VI of the Higher Education Act. Applicants must be currently enrolled in or have an application under review for a graduate or undergraduate degree program at the University of Florida. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply. FLAS recipients must be enrolled at UF during the grant period. Students in any UF department or college are eligible.

Students applying for an academic year fellowship and for a summer intensive fellowship must submit two separate applications.

Students from all UF colleges are encouraged to apply.
Fellowships are offered for the following lesser and least commonly taught European languages:

  • Arabic
  • Czech
  • Hungarian
  • Italian
  • Modern Greek
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Turkish

Undergraduate students are eligible to apply to study these languages at the intermediate or advanced level (i.e. not the first two semesters of the language).

Graduate students are eligible to apply at the intermediate and advanced level, but they may also apply at the beginning level if they have already achieved advanced proficiency in another language. Priority is given to applications for the intermediate or advanced level.
In exceptional cases, funding may also be available to support language training in French, German, or Spanish.

If you would like to apply for an academic FLAS to study a European language not listed above, please email one of the CES FLAS contacts. It is expected that students pursuing an AY FLAS will take classes on campus. In rare cases, an AY FLAS can be awarded to pursue study abroad if the language is not offered at UF or the language level is not offered at UF.

It is recommended that fellowship recipients also work toward fulfilling the requirements for a Certificate in Modern European Studies at the graduate level, or a minor or certificate in European Union or East Central European Studies at the undergraduate level.

AY fellowships provide a set stipend per academic year ($20,000 for graduates and $5,000 for undergraduates) and cover the cost of tuition and fees (12 credits for graduate students, 12 credits for undergraduate students, per semester at in-state rates).

Successful applicants will show:

  • Clear promise of completing a graduate or undergraduate degree with a European concentration and a demonstrated need to acquire proficiency in a related language.
  • Relevance of the FLAS language and area studies courses to their plan of study.
  • An excellent academic record as demonstrated by grades, SAT or GRE scores, and letters of recommendation.
  • Financial Need.
