EU Studies at CES
The Center for European Studies is an Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Center of Excellence (JMCE) and home to UF’s Jean Monnet Chair (ad personam). CES was the first JM Center of Excellence in the country and among the first to house a JM Chair. As a hub for European Union Studies at UF and in the region, CES offers a wide range of courses, workshops, and talks highlighting the impact of the EU on a diverse range of disciplines and policy areas.
In addition to the courses and events hosted under the auspices of the Erasmus+ programs, CES offers a minor and certificate in EU Studies. The degrees combine coursework with high impact practices such as internships and study abroad to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of the institutions, history, and politics of the European Union. Along with our degree program, the Center runs a study abroad program, UF in Brussels, that offers students the opportunity to study and intern in the heart of the EU. CES also supports the EU Studies Club, sponsoring club talks and events to highlight the EU on campus.
Jean Monnet Center of Excellence
“Centres of Excellence are designed to serve as a focal point of knowledge and skills on European Union affairs.” As an Erasmus+ Center of Excellence, CES offers unique courses and workshops on various aspects of the EU, including sustainability, security studies, media, and digital humanities. In addition, through the JMCE, the Center offers faculty course enhancement awards for the development of new EU material.
Jean Monnet Chair
CES hosts the UF Jean Monnet Chair (ad personam). JM Chairs enhance the teaching of and course offering on the European Union at institutions of higher education. At CES, in addition to EU courses, the JM Chair fosters research opportunities for junior faculty and graduate students pursuing work on the European Union and supports undergraduate research and extracurricular activities on the EU.
EU Studies Minor and Certificate
The EU Studies program was established in 2001 and is a fully interdisciplinary degree with courses in departments including Anthropology, Food and Human Nutrition, History, Political Science, and Sociology. The program provides both minor and certificate degrees that offer a comprehensive range of courses on the EU and opportunities to extend learning outside the classroom.
UF in Brussels
This unique study abroad program offers students the opportunity to live and study in Brussels, Belgium, the heart of the European Union. Over the course of six weeks, students are introduced to the European Union through coursework, visits to and guest speakers from the EU institutions and other relevant organizations. Students also have the option of applying for an internship during the program, though internships are not guaranteed.
