Alexander Panayotov received an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Law and Society from New York University. He earned his first law degree from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Bulgaria, and an LL.M. in international and comparative law from the George Washington University Law School. In addition, he earned an M.A. in political science and international relations from the University of Delaware.

Dr. Panayotov’s research interests intersect European law, political science, and law and society. In particular, he explores the politics of jurisdictional conflicts in the Europe. Traditionally, courts in nation-states regulated citizens, property, and events within their domestic jurisdictional boundaries. The advent of both globalization and the European regional integration produced a rapid increase in the interactions between citizens from different countries and proliferation of jurisdictional conflicts with multiple courts claiming the authority to resolve legal cases. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECt.HR) mediate the tensions between national legal systems and legalize political conflicts by channeling them through national and supra-national courts alike. In pursuing this research, Dr. Panayotov employs social scientific methodology to study the politics of these conflicts with a special emphasis on private international law.

Dr. Panayotov teaches courses in law and society, international law, European law and politics, and privacy. He plans to develop courses in European state building, diplomacy, comparative legal traditions, and human rights.
