“The Reawakening” by Primo Levi

A firsthand account of the aftermath of WWII from the perspective of an Italian Jew liberated from a Nazi concentration camp, the novel addresses the difficult position of American and Soviet soldiers running displaced persons’ camps post-WWII who went from being an invading force to an occupying force to caretakers of war victims. Discussion led by Dr. Alice Freifeld, UF Department of History
