Conversations on Europe Virtual Roundtable: Gilet Jaunes in France: Understanding the Yellow Vests Movement
Sheri Berman, Barnard College; Cole Stang, freelance Paris journalist, Celia Belin, Brookings Institutions, and Jae-Jae Spoon, University of Pittsburgh
The gilets jaunes, or yellow vests, are members of a grassroots political movement that began in France in October 2018 with widespread protests disrupting travel for months. During this session, our panel of experts will not only discuss who the gilets jaunes are and what they are demanding, but also the larger context of French street protests, European politics, and the role of digital activism in organizing the movement. Audience participation is encouraged. To participate remotely, contact irm24@pitt.edu. Hosted by the University of Pittsburgh European Studies Center Lunch provided.
