A Greek Tragedy in the Making? The Eurozone vs. Greece in an Era of Radical Left Politics, a debate

Please join us for a debate between Tom Kostopoulos & Ioannis Ziogas as they offer differing opinions on the rise of the Greek radical left party (Syriza) and the consequences of its recent electoral victory on the future of Greece and the Eurozone. The debate will revolve around the issues of the current democratic deficit in Europe, the viability and sustainability of the Greek debt, & the substantive impact of austerity measures on the economy & the political environment.

Tom Kostopoulos (Ph.D. University of Wisconsin-Madison) is Lecturer in the Department of Classics and the Center for European Studies. His research interests are diverse and range from Classical Literature to post-WWII Greek history. He teaches Modern Greek and courses on the relationship between Greek culture and the formation of a new European identity.

Ioannis Ziogas is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Political Science, University of Florida. His research interests revolve around causes of interstate conflict, environmental politics, and decision making process theories. He completed his undergraduate studies in Greece (BA in Political Science and Diplomacy) and obtained a MA in International Studies from the University of Sheffield (UK), before being employed by the Greek Permanent Representation to the EU in 2009 as a member of its environmental staff.
