During the Cold War, East Germany and Cuba nurtured an alliance on the basis of a shared ideological belief. This often overlooked relationship may be best illustrated by an unusual Cuban gift: An island named after the East German Communist idol Ernst Thälmann off the coast of Cuba. So what characterized this East German-Cuban friendship and how did it develop?
