Please join us for a talk by Ari Joskowicz, Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies and European Studies at Vanderbilt University, as he addresses a largely unexplored aspect of Jewish modernity by illuminating the extent to which French and German Jews made use of the liberal catalog of villains in their attempts to express themselves politically.  It demonstrates how Jews used Catholicism and the Catholic Church as a foil that helped them define what it meant to be good citizens and practice a respectable religion.
