The UF Center for European Studies holds annual competitions for Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum (FLAC) Course Development Grants, open to UF faculty and eligible UF graduate students, in the following European languages: Arabic, Czech, French, German, modern Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply.The FLAC awards are funded in part by the Department of Education Title VI grant and the Center for European Studies at the University of Florida.
Faculty and graduate students from all UF colleges are encouraged to apply.
FLAC courses are one-credit “applied language” sections for existing courses or new course development in various European languages. FLAC content courses can be offered in a number of subject areas include, but limited to, Agricultural Sciences, Anthropology, Architecture, Business, Economics, Film Studies, History, Journalism, Law, Political Science, Women’s Studies.
Fellowships are offered for the following lesser and least commonly taught European languages:
Arabic*, Czech, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Modern Greek, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish.
* FLAC course content must have minimum 50% European focus.
All FLAC course units are offered at the 3000 or third year level, and students must have the necessary language fluency as demonstrated through course work or permission of the instructor to enroll.
For UF Faculty:
Faculty grants recipients will receive a flat $5,000 award. Please note that the FLAC is normally taught as an overload, and the stipend is paid as a lump sum the semester the course is taught. Faculty must provide a letter from their Chair stipulating that they are allowed to teach the overload and confirming that the course will be cross-listed in their home department, where that is an option, as well as listed as a section of EUS 3938 (European Applied Language).

- Information on the expected student audience and anticipated enrollment
- Syllabus
- For an applied language section – please submit the syllabus for the area studies course to which the FLAC unit will be linked
- For a new course – please submit a detailed syllabus outline, with clear indication of the type of assigned readings and use of language in instruction
- CV
- For applied language sections only: If the instructor proposing the FLAC is different from the instructor of the core course that the FLAC is linked to, the formal written permission of the core course instructor is also required.
- Letter from your Chair stipulating that they are allowed to teach the overload and confirming that the course will be cross-listed in their home department, where that is an option.
